2012 Defense Authorization Bill
(R) Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has sponsored a bill that states…
"The president has the authority to use all necessary and appropriate force during the current armed conflict with al Qaeda, the Taliban, and associated forces pursuant to the authorization for use of military force."
This bill would remove any approval /consent from Congress as long as the military action is under that banner of “fighting the war on terror”. One man, the President, would have authority to conduct any military action he saw fit. This is not a separation of power; this is not a system of checks and balances. Perhaps we should not be making military conflicts easier to get into?
This bill also proposes and prohibits the president from closing Gitmo by prohibiting funds to be used to “modify or construct” US facilities to hold detainees from Gitmo. It also prohibits Gitmo detainees from being transferred to U. S. prisons.
Lastly this bill takes a shot on the repeal of DADT, by requiring all four Joint-Chiefs to “determine if gays and lesbians serving openly would impact combat readiness.” Keep in mind, there have already been comprehensive studies and surveys conducted on this matter and congressional hearings. This is an obvious attempt to delay the repeal of DADT. Read up on the bill and comment would you vote for this proposed bill as is?
